She would…” What did you just say?” Elders Ruth and Thomas stopped mid-sentence. “Did I just hear you say that the power that tore through here was due to a bonding?” Mouths moved, but neither spoke. “What bond? What could cause that?”

Thomas sighed. “It’s a closely guarded secret, privy only to Council members.”

“I think we have bigger concerns. Someone unleashed immense power against us. How?”

Ruth looked at Thomas, who nodded, then explained. “When two paranormal beings, of different classifications, form a soul bond, it can result in unpredictable power or abilities. There’s no way to know what capabilities and strengths will result, only that mixed pairings, who form a soul bond, always produce such an outcome. The power burst we all just experienced was the result of a bond forming between a magic user and either a shifter or a vampire.”

“You’re saying that a magic user bonded with someone, which resulted in enough energy to tear apart this room. And they gain extra abilities as well? You are fools. Do you not see the possibilities? Why keep this information hidden?”

“You are a fool if you think common knowledge of this would help. How would we govern and control if just anyone could mate across classifications and gain access to untold power or extra abilities? There is a reason this action is forbidden. Balance must be maintained.” Ruth turned to other Elders. “We must find who did this and eliminate them immediately. I will reach out to the Assassin’s Guild for assistance. The rest of you need to find out who this is and report back to me immediately.”

Forgotten, Charlotte backed out of the Council chamber, a new plan coming together. If bonding with another could increase her power, she would finally have her vengeance and enough strength to overthrow these fools. She knew just what to do with this new information. An offhand remark once made in her presence would finally bear fruit.

Bryan had been right about one thing today; the Elders had definitely outlived their usefulness. She would soon correct that. Then she would deal with him.
